Prof. Matten is a distinguished scholar who holds the chair of sinological studies at Erlangen-Nuremberg University (Institute of languages and cultures of the Near East and East Asia). His whose work covers a wide range of issues such national identity, the history of science or he production of historical knowledge in China. His most recent book publications include a research monograph, Imagining a Postnational World — Hegemony and Space in Modern China and an edited volume, Places of Memory in Modern China – History, Politics, Identity.
